What is it about “NO” you don’t understand?

BEING POSITIVE IS EASY

Look at this batch of old bottles. I’ve been collecting old medicine bottles of all shapes and sizes. But I need thousands of them. They will eventually all contain one of the easiest spells there is. The trouble is, although its easy, you need an awful lot of it because, for it to be effective, it has to be given to very large groups of the population. For that reason, its a pain in the neck to do. Quantity not quality. Its like making jam when there’s a glut of fruit - you never have enough bottles to pour it into. Anyway, I’ll get down to it soon. It shouldn’t be necessary to use this spell. But humans sometimes need a kick on the backside. This spell gives them that kick.

I’m writing this bit, in the hope I won’t need to go ahead with this marathon “jam-making” session. It would be easier if you would just do it, rather than relying on magic.

MCAS/MMC has created great anxiety and consternation among junior doctors and their families and friends.

Fortunately these young doctors have not been intimidated by this situation but have addressed the issue in their own way and are continuing to do so.

But MCAS/MMC has ramifications well beyond medical jobs and medical training.

We will never really know whether senior medical staff would ever have stirred from their deep sleep if the juniors had not made the first move. Probably not. The Witch Doctor thinks the Great and the Good of the medical profession would have continued to slumber in committee rooms, be trained as upskilled selectors and agreed and nodded to every utterence from the DOH. This is all the more dismal, because the Witch Doctor believes that senior medics are a powerful force who together could once more make the NHS the envy of the world. They simply must stop responding to both carrots and sticks and learn when, after their considered opinion, it is appropriate to say a simple two lettered word. It is much more effective than words of four letters.

That word is “NO”.

It is not difficult to say “NO”

It does not take eloquence to say “NO”

It is not even necessary to speak the English language to say “NO”

“NO” is universally understood.

However, saying “NO” might mean you are not liked. It might also mean that you are not invited to sit on the next important government committee. It might mean no one ever says “Well done!” It might mean you will never more be regarded as one of the Great and the Good. In these circumstances it might take courage to say “NO”.

Saying “NO” might mean though, that you have the respect of many of your peers who are not saying no, but not saying yes either.

Saying “NO” might mean that you have the respect of those coming after you.

Saying “NO” might mean that patients have a safer future.

Regard saying “NO” as a kind of potent magic spell. The results will surprise you. You will begin to feel in control again.

I hope you don’t need my spell. If you do, I’ll put in some nasty side effects, because of the bother you’ve given me!
