Competency based learning - why?

COMPETENCIES - THE NEW MANTRA!

The Witch Doctor seems to recollect that the days when Problem Based learning (PBL) was the mantra.

The Witch Doctor could see a lot of sense in this, although did not entirely agree that any one method of education should be used to the exclusion of others.

It now seems that Competency Based Learning (CBL) is now the mantra. Will this be remembered as the Donaldsonisation of Medical Education?

MMC seems exclusively to enshrine CBL.

Why?

When did this happen?

The answer, the The Witch Doctor thinks is related to concern over the falling rates of participation of the medical workforce.

The Tooke report or commission or review or whatever it is, is gethering opinions from medics and non-medics alike:

Personally I think it is the duty of everyone involved in the NHS who has an opinion, not just the junior and senior doctors, but everyone, to provide their opinion. It’s the same form for medics and non-medics, but they will separate out the responses once they’ve got them

Aphra.

I’ve just had a look at the link and will certainly submit my answers.

It would be great if everyone who marched on St Patrick’s day responded.

Will try to spread the word.

Thanks, Aphra, for letting me know.
