MTAS down. MMC still to go!

witch10.jpg

WHO KNOWS WHAT MMC IS ABOUT?

Really about.

And what is driving it?

We all know what is written about MMC. It is about a training structure that will produce more, fully trained doctors earlier. Specialist doctors who will be up to the ears in competencies. Specialist doctors who may be either GPs or something else (the word consultant is creeping into oblivion.) It will be flexible (flexible for whom?). It will be good for the “Lost Tribes” and it will be very very good for patients to be treated by people who know what they are doing for a change.

Really?

The Witch Doctor thinks the summary on the MMC website is rather insulting to generations of competent doctors who chose not to wear their competencies on their sleeves.

But competencies they had.

All of them.

And furthermore, the hidden competencies were all joined up.

Not by pernicious protocols but by brains.

So, we know this.

But what is really driving MMC?

The Witch Doctor thinks it is because of great concern over future medical staffing due to:
1. The large intake of female medical students
2. The European Working Time Directive
3. Premature retirements
4. Cultural changes which demand a better work/leisure balance
5. An ageing population

ie a rapidly diminishing medical workforce participation.

In spite of the current perception of looming medical unemployment, Sir Liam Donaldson, CMO, consistently states we need to produce more doctors.

A Health Service of all the Talents, Agenda for Change, MTAS, Modernising Medical Careers, The Expert Patient and other initiatives all point to concern about diminishing medical workforce participation.

The Witch Doctor thinks this is probably the real reason. The benevolent reason. The altruistic reason.

It is not that todays specialists are poorly trained.

The Witch Doctor may be wrong.

There may be another reason.

To destabilise the all too powerful medical profession. To select out and reward those who always agree. To get the others to walk to heel. To flatten by introducing a competency driven workforce. To cause unrest. To prepare for the demise of the NHS.

And to blame the medical establishment.

The fault of the greedy, arrogant medical establishment.

Not the fault of a caring government.

A government, though, poised to welcome huge international healthcare consortiums into the UK.

To take on the monstrous unmanageable responsibility that is the NHS.

And to profit.

A conspiracy.

The Witch Doctor is a suspicious witch who recognises conspiracies.

This is not one.

It may have started as one.

But it is not one now.

It is panic.

The government will need to engage the grass roots of the medical profession. Not just the juniors. GP’s, consultants, academics too.

Quickly.

They can only do that if they give them back their professionalism.

The professionalism that has been meticulously disassembled by a government that likes to control.

Before it is too late.

For the NHS.
