THE SCOPE OF THE CONSULTANT PRACTITIONER
At present, it seems most “Advanced Practitioners” are recruited from the nursing profession, although Agenda for Change will doubtless open it up to other groups of staff. Consultant Practitioners are appearing in different areas - for example the Consultant Scientist in laboratory medicine is well established. In some hospitals a laboratory Consultant Scientist is seen as interchangable with a Medical Consultant.
Fleur Kitsell is a Physiotherapist. She is also Associate Dean, with responsibility for Consultant Practitioner Development at Wessex Deanery.

In this presentation, it is difficult to understand the significance of the bars of gold, the chocolate and a great painting of Mother Theresa without knowing what was said, however the last slides demonstrate the advantages of having Consultant Practitioners, who may be either nurses or physiotherapists, caring for patients with stroke, cystic fibrosis, critical care, and patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
The questions in The Witch Doctor’s mind are these:
“Will the new designer MMC “fully qualified” doctors, the competency based specialists of tomorrow, eventually be called Consultant Practitioners and be totally absorbed into the large “Agenda for Change” escalator alongside other Consultant Practitioners from various backgrounds?
Will the highly experienced consultants be much fewer in number than they are today, sit in Level 9, and be given a new name eg Senior Consultants perhaps?
Will there be just enough of these expensive Level 9 doctors to advise governments and senior administrators, create protocols with their names attached, solve complex problems and, when things get really tough, carry the can?
Will the predominantly female medical workforce of the future accept what is effectively a subconsultant grade with little fuss because historically the majority of female doctors with children choose to work part-time for long periods?”
