DO NOT PUT THE SICK IN COMPARTMENTS!
The Witch Doctor has been reading many documents recently. Many of these have been about Patient Centred Care.
It seems there are four main groups of people.
1. The Patients
2. The Public
3. The Health Care Workers
4. The Doctors.
Sometimes Doctors seem to be Health Care Workers and at other times not.
Not because:
They talk down to patients.
They ignore patients, prefering to talk among themselves.
They don’t wash their hands.
They are paternalistic (this will change, they will soon become maternalistic with the UK heading for a 70% female workforce)
They don’t have 24 hour surgeries
They don’t much like doing house calls.
They need to become more competent.
They can’t work in teams.
They are paid too much money and are bankrupting the NHS
etc etc.
The Witch Doctor, however, comes across many, many doctors while flying around the world on The Broomstick. The Witch Doctor sees much suffering. The Witch Doctor can assure you of this:
DOCTORS ARE PATIENTS TOO!
THE CHILDREN OF DOCTORS, THE PARENTS OF DOCTORS, THE BROTHERS OF DOCTORS, THE SISTERS OF DOCTORS, THE GRANDPARENTS OF DOCTORS, THE AUNTS, UNCLES, COUSINS, FRIENDS OF DOCTORS ARE ALL PATIENTS TOO!
Major surgery, septicaemia, leukaemia, stroke, coronary, cancer, subarachnoid heamorrhage, diabetic coma, meningitis, arthritis, asthma, amputations, respiratory failure, renal failure, depression, injury, and a whole host of conditions “the public” have never heard of. i.e. all the conditions known to mankind.
You name it, doctors and their nearest and dearest get it!
And sometimes they die, their parents die, their children die.
Peacefully, painfully, slowly, suddenly, tragically.
So, do not assume that doctors do not know about the needs of patients.
Doctors have first hand knowledge of all of these things.
From the patients’ point of view and from the carers’ point of view.
DOCTORS ARE PATIENTS.
DOCTORS ARE CARERS.
DOCTORS ARE SUFFERERS
They just don’t talk about it much.
It is distressing for them and not helpful for their patients.
Why is this never acknowledged in all the documents The Witch Doctor reads?
WHY ARE THE MEDICAL PROFESSION AS PATIENTS BEING IGNORED?
WHERE ARE THE STUDIES ASKING DOCTORS ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE, AS PATIENTS IN THE NHS?
WHERE DID THIS SILLY ASSUMPTION ORIGINATE THAT DOCTORS DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THE NEEDS OF PATIENTS?
Is it pernicious spin in order to undermine the medical profession?
Is it?
It could be, couldn’t it, My Black Cat?
If so, what should we do about it?
Is it worth a spell or two?
