DOCTOR CENTRED CARE

Yes, doctors are patients too!

And so are their families!

And here is an outline of Doctor-Patient Centred Care.

When The Doctor-Patient first realises he/she may be ill with a non-emergency variety of illness, this is what The Doctor-Patient wants:

1. A medical case history taken by doctor ie GP.

2. A physical examination by same GP.

3. Appropriate preliminary investigations planned by same GP.

4. The interpretation of these results discussed with same GP.

5. A differential diagnosis discussed with same GP.

6. A discussion with same GP about what is next in the plan.

In that order.

To do this properly takes time.

It might be nice if the GP is great communicator too and bends over backwards to be nice.

However, the Doctor-Patient knows the GP has very little time with each patient.

The Doctor-Patient knows that being a great communicator takes time.

The Doctor-Patient knows that being extra nice takes time.

So, it does not matter very much to the Doctor-Patient if the Doctor-Patient’s doctor is not very touchy-feely nor particularly nice.

In fact some Doctor-Patient’s are even a bit uncomfortable with overly nice touchy-feely very nice doctors.

Some Doctor-Patients don’t even mind being seen by a doctor they don’t like very much.

They just want their doctor to get on with the job and to keep up to date with medicine (this takes a huge amount of time).

The Doctor-Patient just wants the doctor to make a sensible differential diagnosis at this stage.

Yes, be yourself, doctor, warts and all.

Doctor-Patients don’t mind.

Doctor-Patients are robust. They can handle the eccentricities of the human race.

Doctor-Patients are glad there are more than 57 Varieties of doctors.
