SOWING THE SEEDS OF AN IDEA

We witches hear and see a lot when we fly around on our broomsticks. We remember well when the word appraisal was introduced into the medical vocabulary. It was many years ago. It was introduced by the universities first. University medical staff were summoned to attend meetiings so they could be educated in this new concept. Some attended and slept through the meetings. Others were gobsmacked. Many ignored the summons.

The more elite were told they would need to be trained as appraisers.

Almost no-one took it seriously.

Some doctors refused to be appraised by their designated appraiser and insisted on someone else. Sometimes the “designated appraiser” was a head of department. The refusal of a member of department to be appraised by his professor could be interpreted as the birth of 360 Degree Feedback I suppose. It was not recognised as such because in these days the 360 Degree Feedback Blue Bottle Spell had not yet been cast.

Some went to the pub for their “appraisal” booze night.

Some, when they passed each other on the corridor were heard saying:

“I’m supposed to appraise you sometime, am I”

“Aye, sometime.”

Maybe.

Usually it didn’t happen. When it did happen, it was a fiasco.

It was a damp squib.

A waste of time, and therefore a waste of money, they thought.

And so it frittered away to nothing.

Dead.

But the seeds were sown…….
