Tooke Report - something’s missing!

MY COUNTING CAT

Why do you have The Abacus out, My Black Cat?

What are you counting?

Females?

Why?

They hardly get a mention in The Tooke Report……

Show me the wordcounts:

women: 2 instances p119, p131

woman: Nil

female: 2 instances p65, p105

females: Nil

Page 119:
This was a response given to a question asked at a MMC Inquiry Trainee Workshop
Q. “What are the pros and cons of “run-through” training? Please list them.”
A. “Reduced flexibility a particular problem for women. No option for pat-time/flexible training in training posts.”

Page 131:
“Since the introduction of the Non-Consultant Career Grade (NCCG) Doctor post in 1987, there has been widespread concern, particularly among some of the Royal Colleges, that NCCGs are overlooked. NCCGs are often appointed by trusts to fillgaps in services when doctors in training are not available. They are viewed as ‘dead-end’ appointments, and are frequently filled by doctors from overseas who have come to the UK for training but have failed to find training posts or have been unsuccessful in passing examinations. They are also the destination for some women (and increasing numbers of men) whoneed to balance working with domestic responsibilities……”

Page 65:
“Female” simply mentioned in the key of a graph demonstrating medical school intake from 1974 to 2004 but not commented upon.

Page 105:
This was the breakdown of the responders to the E-consultation.
“Of the 4630 participants, the gender split was 58 % male, 41% female, 1% no response.
Participants were based 78.3 % England, 9.8 % Scotland, 4.1% Wales and 1.7 % N Ireland.
By decade of graduation, the split was: 0.04 % 1950s, 1 % 1960s, 7.5% 1970s, 10 % 1980s, 20 % 1990s, 50 % 2000s.
By stage of career, the split was 3% FY1, 10% FY2, 31% SHO, 17% SpR and 23% Consultant”

Hmmm……..

Females are conspicuous by their absence.

They seem to have put the fundamental issue of the female medical work pattern to the side.

Why?

Are they ignoring them?

Pretending they don’t exist?

Do they not know what to do with them?

Do they think 1 Male doctor = 1 Female doctor?

Are they not algebra competent?

Have they lost their abacus?

Or are they just fearful…..?

Go and find out how many female medical graduates were on the Inquiry Panel, My Black Cat.

A 60/40 female to male ratio would barely be representative.

You can’t find the answer?

That’s because your’e stuck at page 50.

It’ll tell you at the end.

You should always read really, really important documents backwards, My Black Cat.
