ROYAL COLLEGE OF OBSTETRICIANS AND GYNAECOLOGISTS COMMENT ON TOOKE INQUIRY
“The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) welcomes Sir John Tooke’s interim report Aspiring Towards Excellence which offers a much needed opportunity to review postgraduate training. The RCOG broadly supports the Report and looks forward to working with the other Royal Colleges, the Department of Health, the Postgraduate Deans and Strategic Health authorities to put excellence back into training.
The RCOG is working hard to improve healthcare for women and welcomes the opportunity to place the role of the doctor at the heart of the healthcare team. We welcome the recognition that all postgraduate training programmes should have the capacity and flexibility to allow trainees to explore individual aptitudes and career choices. At the same time acknowledging the importance of research, education, management, public health programmes and overseas electives.
At a time when recruitment into our specialty is already low the RCOG is pleased that the Report recognises the MTAS failures for the medical profession, which has affected staffing levels in hospitals and has resulted in low morale for doctors seeking training posts.
In the wake of the problems with MTAS, and with the approval of the Department of Health, the RCOG has been working closely with the Deaneries and has developed a speciality specific selection process which avoids duplication of effort and offers candidates a fair but competitive opportunity to follow their career choice.
These measures have proven successful both in terms of trainee satisfaction and full recruitment into NHS service and training posts. We would be keen to develop these processes in line with those discussed in the Report.
The RCOG, as the standards setter and custodian of the specialist training curriculum, looks forward to working closely with the GMC, PMETB or any future organisations to ensure a first class training system for the consultants of the future.”
