Should consultants make the beds?

THE BEDMAKING BRIGADE

Tell me, My Black Cat, Have you ever, ever, ever seen a consultant make a patient’s bed?

No?

Nor me!

Have you seen any doctor ever, ever, ever, make a patient’s bed?

Yes?

Just once. Only once. A woman doctor who wanted to learn how to tuck in the corners in the pretty way that nurses used to do.

But once she’d learned, she didn’t do it any more.

But maybe when she makes the beds at home her family now benefit from this competency.

Maybe.

AWAITING A CANDIDATE FOR A BED MAKING COMPETENCY EXAM

Do you think, in the new NHS plan, consultants should have to pass a bed making competency test?

Heavens no!

Why not, My Black Cat?

Because they have far more important things to do……..

But surely there is nothing more important for a patient than having a nice comfy bed when feeling poorly?

It’s not the job of a consultant or any doctor to make beds.

It’s not cost effective. They are paid too much. It’s a waste of a training.

But they could take a medical history at the same time.

And assess the patients ability to get in and out of bed.

Multi-tasking .

Saving money.

I suppose so…….
