THE BED-MAKING BRIGADE
If the consultants were allocated time within their job plans to make the beds, they would know how long their patients were lying on soiled sheets. They would know when their patients had diarrhoea. They would know when bed-sores were developing. They would know when there was not enough bed linen available to change the sheets between patients. They would pay more attention to the fact that beds are often crammed far too close together. They may take their patients to the toilet and see whether the toilets, commodes and showers are clean.
They may be aghast at some of the things they discovered.
They would waken up, in much the same way as MTAS wakened them up from their slumbers.
They would do something about it immediately. Surely?
A CONSULTANT’S BACK YARD
So, why should they not be contracted to make the beds, My Black Cat?
Because the nurses do it better.
But it is often not the nurses who make the beds, My Black Cat. The nurses are busy doing many other things.
It is the practitioners on the lower level of the Skills Escalator in The Secret NHS who are the bed-makers.
Practitioners with a protocol.
Practitioners who have no clout.
Practitioners who are dispensable if they speak out.
Consultants have lots and lots of clout.
Consultants can speak out.
Very loudly.
They are capable of getting things sorted out immediately.
Consultants can change things.

Sometimes they forget this.
Their thoughts are deep thoughts and they are often elsewhere.
On things that they think are more important than bed-making.
Bed-making would waken them up with a jolt.
And draw their attention to lots of problems in their own back yard.
Don’t you think so, My Black Cat?
Huh?
You don’t think consultants have a back yard any more?
Their patients are spread all over the place?
They wouldn’t be able to find them!
Or their beds!
Oh well, we can forget about that then…….
