ENGAGING THE SHOP-FLOOR LEADERS
Once My Less Irksome Friend spoke to the consultants he met with the ward sisters. He learned how frustrated they were.
They felt they were being blamed for the spread of MRSA within their unit.
They perceived that medical staff did not wash their hands as frequently as the nursing staff.
They said there were not enough isolation facilities.
They felt they had no control over the cleaning of their wards.
They said maintenance was no longer an automatic routine.
They felt indents for repairs were being ignored. As an example, they pointed to patient chairs with slashed upholstery which could not be adequately cleaned.
They said patient staff ratios were inadequate.
They said that overwork lead to sick leave which lead to more overwork or the increased use of agency staff.
And more……
And more……

THE SISTERS
My Less Irksome Friend had heard this all before.
Many times.
He knew that only the consultants directly responsible for their patients had sufficient clout to deal with the problem.
He knew that the consultants and ward sisters working closely together every single day would resolve the problem.
With his help of course.
And the help of a Search and Destroy policy.
My Less Irksome Friend contacted the Medical Director and Chief Executive of the Trust to tell them about the problem and what was being done about it.
He gave them solutions. Not problems.
They listened.
They nodded.
Because by this time, the problem had reached the media.
In these days, the media was the Achilles Heel of senior medical mangement.
And of politicians too.
Not so today.
Eh, My Black Cat.
