MRSA and My Less Irksome Friend (4)

NOW YOU SEE THEM, NOW YOU DON’T

My Less Irksome Friend had two particular problems some years ago, when he tried to clear MRSA from a regional unit.

Problem 1

None of the hospitals in the Trust had infection control nursing staff.

None at all.

There had been a great blowing of trumpets when three ICNs were appointed some years before. One by one they moved on, or retired.

They were never replaced.

This tends to happen with new ideas within the NHS.

A brash, noisy, ushering in followed by a sneaky, silent frittering out.

My Less Irksome Friend sent many letters requesting that the ICNs be replaced.

Sometimes the letters were ignored. Sometimes, he was asked to produce a stated case.

Delaying tactics.

It was very tiresome for My Less Irksome Friend.

Cutbacks. Money needed elsewhere.

Posts frozen.

In these days, governments and therefore, management did not perceive that infection control was a quality issue.

After all, infection was a thing of the past.

And would remain so.

My Less Irksome Friend did not agree, but the time was not right for anyone to listen to what he said.

But he kept saying his bit and writing letters.

Many of them.

Problem 2

Because of the nature of this unit, and the type of patients within it, the wards could not be closed.

However, My Less Irksome Friend knew that having fully engaged the consultants and the sisters, the staff on the shop floor, they would probably succeed in eradicating MRSA from the unit.

Then.

But not now.

My Less Irksome Friend’s next step was to draw a map and photocopy it many times.
