THE SECOND GOOGLE SEARCH FOUND SOMETHING SCARY
The first google search linking Liam Donaldson and Allyson Pollock found something interesting. Nevertheless it was not what we were looking for.
So, we did another search linking CMO and Allyson Pollock.
The CMO, however, was not Sir Liam Donaldson. It was Harry Burns, Scotland’s CMO.
The venue was The University of Glasgow.
The speaker was Professor Allyson Pollock.
The audience consisted mainly of GPs.
There were a few others scattered around eg the media.
Do you suppose Scotland’s CMO knew Allyson Pollock, knew what she would be saying, knew that it would be controversial, and knew that the media would be there, My Black Cat?
You suppose so?

SCARY HUBRIS
Here are some extracts from the media following that meeting.
“SCOTLAND’S Chief Medical Officer has warned health professionals that the NHS will copy Englishstyle market reforms unless they give their full support to ministers.
Dr Harry Burns, the country’s most senior doctor, says Tony Blair’s agenda is “scary stuff” that the Scottish Executive may be pressed into adopting.”
If he was speaking out of turn, he could not be criticised too much by his own government, since he then went on to support them in a kind of a way.
“The CMO also warned his audience that unless they stopped complaining about the Scottish reform agenda, the Executive would copy the English model.
“If we are constantly sniping from the sidelines and not getting behind our ministers, they’ll lose their nerve, ” he said.
Burns also claimed the Executive was under pressure from the Government to pursue Blairite policies on foundation hospitals and greater use of the private sector.
“The Prime Minister came to Scotland last year and publicly criticised the Scottish NHS. If that is the public comment, imagine the heat Jack McConnell and Andy Kerr are getting behind the scenes, ” he said.
“We can get together and get behind these proposals, behind the ministers, to stop this from happening in Scotland.”
Was the Scottish CMO speaking out of turn? Was he speaking for himself? Did he get his knuckles rapped?
Were his comments a reflection of what other CMO’s also believe.
What do all four CMO’s talk about behind closed doors when they get together?
Do the CMO’s of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, think the Job-Share Pied Piper’s reforms are “Scary stuff” too?
What do you think, My Black Cat?
Anyway, it is good to hear that freedom of speech is still conserved north of the border.
Isn’t it, My black Cat?
a red apple ……………………
