NEVER EVENTS
Sir Liam Donaldson has had his knuckles wrapped (an understatement) by medical bloggers over MMC/MTAS.
The Witch Doctor, however sees our CMO as a bit of an enigma. He says some strange things at times and My Black Cat is of the opinion he sometimes he uses a tongue in cheek technique to highlight important and serious issues that he is not in a position to discuss. She may be wrong about this of course, as Black Cats often are.
One of the comments he made some time ago related to fining hospitals when a patient acquired MRSA.
This was the last straw for Dr Grumble. He couldn’t make up his mind whether it was he (Dr Grumble), or the CMO who was going round the bend!
Dr Grumble has never quite recovered…….
This (not Dr Grumble) is, of course, crazy - the movement of NHS funds from “bad” hospital to “good” government is just a merry-go-round of taxpayer’s money (unless of course the hospital in question has been privatised in which case everything comes into meaningful focus).
So, The Human Kind can draw their own conclusions about our CMO.

Anyway, things have moved even further in the USA.
There are NEVER EVENTS on the other side of the atlantic.
“Never events” are things that should not have happened.
Amputating the wrong leg, for example, would be a “never event.”
Since it happened, but shouldn’t have happened, then no one gets paid for doing the procedure.
So far, so OK.
However, what are “never events?” Acquiring MRSA, a UTI following catheterisation, post op pneumonia, having to wait 3 months for a hospital appointment, losing a patient’s case notes - are these never events?
And if so, how can these never events, never happen?
