The Dr. Nurse - the origin?

A NURSE WITH A MISSION

My Black Cat is looking into the origins of the Dr. Nurse in the USA just in case it may soon have relevance in the UK.

Who knows…….

She’s bringing me little snippets all the time, like pieces of a jigsaw.

I don’t know whether they mean much, or whether we will be able to fit them all together.

The rise of the Dr. Nurse in the USA did not happen out of the blue - it seems to be the brainchild of Mary Mundinger, Dean of the Columbia University School of Nursing and the Centennial Professor in Health Policy.

Mary O’Neil Mundinger was born circa 1937 and raised in New York. She entered nursing at a time when it was a very hands on profession. She has experience in midwifery/gynecology, intensive care nursing, and eventually after further studies became a family nurse practitioner.

She won a fellowship which took her to Washington where she served on the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee under Senator Edward Kennedy. She also was on the Health Professionals Review Group involved in analysing Hilary Clinton’s health care reforms.

She is the author of the books “Home Care controversy: Too Little, Too Late, Too Costly”, and “Autonomy in Nursing.”

Note: “Autonomy in Nursing.”

My Black Cat thinks “Autonomy in Nursing” is the first piece of the jigsaw.

This book was published in 1980.
