WHAT IS MEDICINE ABOUT?

So, taken at face value, Ben Bradshaw says that the government’s proposals are to improve the NHS not privatise it.

So the following companies, who according to “Pulse Today” have just indicated that they will be bidding to run Polyclinics, Health Centres (call them what you will), don’t get it?

They just don’t get it?

Or do we not get it?

All this confusion is arising because Gordon Brown in his run up to the leadership contest had already decided that he wanted to visit his GP on a Saturday because he was going to be a very very busy man trying to live up to Tony’s legacy.

Does the House of Commons not have their own resident doctor, or a first aid worker, or somebody of that ilk, My Black Cat?

That would save a lot of bother!

Look again for the word polyclinic, so popular with HMG a few months ago.

DOH - NEW LEGISLATION TO SUPPORT NEXT STAGE REVIEW

“A new NHS Reform Bill to help deliver improved, more personalised care for millions of patients, was included in the Government’s draft legislative programme, published today.

The Bill will take forward any proposals arising from the NHS Next Stage Review that will require primary legislation to implement. Lord Darzi’s final report, published in the summer, will set out how the Government will support clinicians to transform the quality of care locally, including:

* Publishing an NHS Constitution setting out the rights and responsibilities of staff and patients to strengthen and sustain the NHS;

* Enabling and encouraging Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) to be more responsive to their local communities including strengthening public involvement in PCTs commissioning arrangements; and,

* Giving greater scope for patients to shape the care they receive including having greater control over the management of their care.

Since the Review began there has been extensive consultation. 60,000 NHS and social care staff, patients, users, carers and members of the public have participated directly in the process. Almost 2,000 frontline clinicians and other staff working in health and social care organisations have led local working groups across eight pathways of care involving discussions with thousands of patients, members of the public and other NHS staff.”

You can’t find the word, My Black Cat?

Never mind, as patients we’re going to be able to decide the shape and management of our care.

I bet its only the tiddly things we’ll be allowed to shape and manage, My Black Cat.

Like insisting on seeing the consultant of your choice, a national expert, in a timely manner when you develop some really horrible disease?

George Monbiot has rattled DOH cages!

TIME FOR PATIENTS TO JUDGE FOR THEMSELVES

The Witch Doctor reads what George Monbiot says:

Basically, the real motivation behind polyclinics was becoming increasingly apparent. A market being generated for Big Business. Lean healthcare and up-skilling becoming the mantra, so the new businesses will profit. Not little local businesses although there might be the odd gesture in that direction. No. GP’s being herded by the government into the big nationals and multi-nationals resting in the wings - the Boots, the Tescos, the United Health, the Virgins of this world.

Divide and rule.

DIVIDE AND RULE

Divide the patients (and clients) from their GP’s (GP’s paid to much and too damn lazy to work evenings and weekends!).

Divide GP’s and hospital consultants (Even patient referrral letters from GP to consultant are sabotaged by management teams).

Divide GP’s from each other by encouraging some to become entrepreneurs and capitalise on the fact that the majority of them are now women, many of whom have hectic lives and rely on part-time work.

Then the word “Polyclinic” took a downturn. So it was dropped. The old fashioned, familiar and friendly term “Health Centre” replaced it. The voters wouldn’t be suspicious of a nice new “Health Centre” in their area, would they?

Then, last Friday, Lord Darzi had to make reassuring noises:

Try and find any of these tough rules that should not have been implicit in how any government should conduct it’s business.

And try to find the word “polyclinic” in this document.

Lastly, but by no means least read Dr Grumble’s take on all this. Dr Grumble only speaks nowadays when he feels very strongly about something. And when he does, what he says is very measured and full of common sense.
