Competencies – the creeping support staff…….

barber.jpg

“SUPPORT STAFF DO MIDWIFE TASKS”

So Says the BBC

So says Kings College London.

So says Professor Jane Sandall.

She does not approve.

So says Christine Beasley, Chief Nursing Officer.

She does not approve.

So says Professor Shaughn O’Brien Vice President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

He does not approve.

So says Susanna Cafferty speaking for the Royal College of Midwives.

They do not approve.

Do the mothers approve? Do the babies approve?

Who knows. No matter. They don’t know the difference. They don’t know the competencies of the staff looking after them. How could they? They have to trust the system.

The problem is that a competency based system slowly creeps.

It creeps because it saves money.

In the beginnning. Not later.

It creeps because the staff clutching a fistful of competencies consider themselves competent.

No, correction. They consider themselves experts.

Yes. A competency based system creeps.

Inevitably.

Shades of MMC!

“The less you know, the more certain you can be.”
