COULD THIS GOVERNMENT BE RATIONING IN A BIG WAY?
Everyone has his/her own breaking point.
Imagine the GPs get totally pissed off.
Imagine every GP takes early retirement at 50.
If you believe some News of the World journalists, then it would seem that GPs are now so rich that they could ALL plan for retirement within the next five years. After all, they could live on a quarter of the obscene salary they make. After a few years investing the remainder in oil, copper, and health care companies based in the USA, it might be possible to live off the interest and capital gains.
Or the really clever GPs could buy back some of the gold, Mr Brown, our then chancellor gave away.
Even if they make a mess of their stock market investments, most GPs know how to live simply.
A lifetime of exhaustion generally means a frugal life: WORK, WORK, WORK, SLEEP, WORK, WORK, WORK, WORK, SLEEP, WORK….. or some kind of work-life balance that is a slight variant thereof.
Yes, they may retire in great numbers and live a simple life and read a book or two, or grow their own cabbages, or do something even more lucrative with the “skills and competencies” they have spent decades acquiring.
RATION GPs AND RATION THE WHOLE NHS
Then those GPs remaining will be in great demand.
Patients and clients may, in desperation, advertise in national papers for a GP. Any GP. (This has happened in Canada).
Patients and clients may be willing to pay remaining GPs a retainer sum of a few hundred pounds a year in order to keep a family doctor. (This is happening in the USA).
Those remaining will become even richer.
But that is the marketplace, my friend.
Do you know any poor dentists?
A clever government might choose to:
Stage 1 – Orchestrate GP pay and conditions to make them appear lazy and greedy.
Stage 2 – Demoralise GPs till they have had enough.
Stage 3 – Make the patients and clients use “NHS” polyclinics with only a few (expensive) doctors – (profit for the multinationals and retiring members of the cabinet)
Stage 4 – Ensure those patients and clients who want a family doctor have to “buy” one.
Then – game, set and match.
Stage 5 – The ultimate rationing. Do not allow “Pick and Mix”
“SORRY, IF YOU CHOOSE TO PAY A RETAINER TO A GP RATHER THAN USE OUR “NHS” POLYCLINIC, THE NHS WILL CHARGE YOU FOR ALL ITS SERVICES”
“After all, as a true socialist government, we cannot allow “Pick and Mix.” Can we?
If you use the NHS then freedom of choice is denied.
If you want freedom of choice, you cannot use the NHS.
Always beware when a government is blowing its trumpet over something. It might just be a smokescreen.
“Patient Choice.” “Patient Choice.” “Patient Choice.”
The Economist (“The gap between high-flown rhetoric and painful reality on the cancer ward”) picked up on this in January.
The Guardian (“Woman dies after fight for dual cancer care”) picks up on it today.
When everything is taken into account, this looks like an extraordinarily clever government.
Only clever though, if the punters don’t catch on to what it is doing until too late.
