WD Apology (13) – Why?

witchyounground

As you can now see, when My Black Cat sent out her scary warning to everyone recently, she was well aware of The Intertwinglement between the Media Standards Trust and Common Purpose. She was also aware that Common Purpose was shrouded in conspiracy theories that she had been reading avidly. Then, to crown it all, it seemed to her as if the criteria for The Witch Doctor’s Test was being fulfilled.

So I suppose her outburst is understandable.

BlahBlah

Anyway, it is interesting that the article she directed bloggers to read during her outburst made no mention of The Intertwinglement. Perhaps those at BNET Technology are unaware of it. The name of the posting made The Witch Doctor chuckle though.

IS AP RUN BY IDIOTS?

You see, Julia Middleton in her book “Leading Beyond Authority” uses the term “useful idiots” so it is not beyond the realms of possibility that someone in BNET Technology is aware of The Intertwinglement.

No doubt we will never know.

Anyway, this excellent post by Erik Sherman and the comments that follow are worth another read now that you know My Black Cat’s thought processes.

“Sometimes you see a business move so stupid, so clearly self-damaging that you have to wonder whether someone inside the corporation is trying to torpedo it. And that’s exactly what is happening at the Associated Press, as it gears up to wage war on every single web site and person that dares use any of its content. The only problems with what and how it is doing so are that it will quickly alienate everyone it needs to work with, find that it’s in direct opposition to U.S. law and custom, and probably see just how easily activists on the web could tie it into knots.”

There is now a sequel to this post dated July 27th. In it Erik Sherman offers AP some advice:

HEY, AP: HERE ARE 7 MONEY MAKING IDEAS FOR YOU.

John Lettice of The Register also picked up on the story and is probably more benevolent towards AP than the title of his post suggests. Nevertheless, he suggests AP is “not cuddly”:

THE INTERNET’S MOST EVIL COMPANY? – THE GREAT SATAN OF THE BLOGOSHERE EXAMINED.

“Information wants to be free? Au contraire, information wants to tell you all about itself, where, how and if you can use it, and it reserves the right to sue the crap out of you if you don’t pay attention.”

Other bloggers have picked up on the story too and most seem to conclude that with a few exceptions ie specialist papers such as The Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal, the combination of charging readers to read, and linkers to link, will not generate the income envisaged and indeed may antagonise so many that it may have the opposite effect.

Why go down this route, then?
