So, My Black Cat, following on from our previous post, it appears that the Association for Palliative Medicine, and The Medical Ethics Alliance wrote to the then Secretary for Trade and Industry to complain about the “Voluntary Euthanasia Society” sanitising it’s name to ‘Dignity in Dying.”
The Secretary for Trade and Industry at that time was Alan Johnson.
We cannot find Alan Johnson’s reply to this letter but their request to him clearly had no effect because the sanitised name “Dignity in Dying” remains till this day.
This begs the question whether Alan Johnson supports euthanasia or not.
Even if he is not in favour of euthanasia, then it is likely that her would have discussed the problem with his predecessor in the Department of Health.
Patricia Hewitt of MTAS fame!
Patricia Hewitt was Secretary of State for Health at the time this letter by the palliative and medical ethics folks was written.
Patsy holds very strong views on euthanasia but she kept them well hidden under her hairnet when she held her position in the Department of Health. After all, it would never do, if the person in charge of the NHS admitted vocally that she was in favour of the law being changed in favour of euthanasia.
Heavens, people might have accused her of condoning killing to save money rather than the more compassionate stance that she likely takes!
No, her euthanasia views would have gone down like a ton of bricks with the voters.
So She didn’t voice them.
Incidentally, My Back Cat, Patsy’s very own page on Wiki makes interesting reading. You get the feeling she can’t quite make up her mind. She started off a conservative and then MI5 classified her as a communist sympathiser. Then she appeared to become a far left socialist. Her apparent indecision even seemed to lead to her breeching her own sex discrimination laws.
She even took it upon herself to criticise mothers who care for their children themselves!
What a cheek, My Black Cat. What a cheek!
If you read the Wiki post and delve even deeper and deeper you”ll find lots of little Intertwinglements to help quench your thirst for such things, My Black Cat. For the moment though, we need to concentrate on euthanasia and not be sidetracked.
