Drastically cutting the cost of surgery

witchround

My Black Cat misses nothing!

Being hot on conspiracy theories, her back arched till she was taller than she was long, when she read one of Dr Phil’s recent posts.

“So how did we arrive at the point that all our major English political parties have a common agenda. Is it some evil scheme with a Common Purpose?”

The Witch Doctor tried to reassure her that Dr Phil just liked to tease black cats and that she was absolutely certain he was not a conspiracy theorist.

However The Witch Doctor, who is not a conspiracy theorist either, thinks Dr Phil would be almost as taken aback as she was to find the vast number of intertwinglements that Common Purpose has within our society. Networking at the highest levels is alive and kicking in the UK in a way that would astound most of the medical profession.

Here is an interesting question that concerns healthcare.

Firstly it is known that David Cameron attended a meeting of Common Purpose in India shortly after the election.

Indeed a course is currently being marketed in India called:

LEADING WITHOUT AUTHORITY

Normally, the term Common Purpose use in the UK is “Leading Beyond Authority.” The change in wording may be significant Creep or it may reflect an inaccurate translation.

Dissha is Hindu for “direction” There is a “Dissha Event” launched by David Cameron for leaders in the UK and India. here is what he said:

“I want to take the relationship between India and Britain to the next level. I want to make it stronger, wider, and deeper… I believe it makes sense for both of us to elevate our relationship to new heights. But this isn’t just about Britain and India; this is a relationship that can benefit the world.”
DAVID CAMERON, UK PRIME MINISTER, INFOSYS, BANGALORE, INDIA, 28 JULY 2010

The event was initiated by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Common Purpose.

And a youtube presentation:

DISHAA – FOR FUTURE LEADERS IN THE UK AND INDIA

What is particularly interesting is a report in today’s Guardian regarding the topic for discussion.

Apparently, in the UK, the NHS tariff for a heart operation costs between £8000 and £10,000.

These potential leaders attending the event were challenged to work out a way to reduce the cost of cardiac surgery form £10,000 to a mere £620.

“Shetty set the challenge of the US$1,000 heart operation at the recent Dishaa event, an initiative created by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office and not-for-profit organisation Common Purpose. He asked participants, who were chosen on the basis of having leadership expertise in their particular discipline rather than having specialist knowledge of healthcare, to determine what systemic change would be required to make heart surgery at this price a possibility.”

“Adirupa Sengupta, international director at Common Purpose and organiser of the four day event, says that the groups worked really hard to come up with models to crack Shetty’s challenge. They first looked at the challenge in the context of innovation in healthcare in general.

“Then they came up with what are the core elements of that, then each group lifted the core elements, and some went deeper into the core elements like is it about prevention of healthcare generally, is it about process innovation, is it about how healthcare is financed and funded, is it about access and inclusion issues, is it about what models are used like PPP (Public Private Partnership),” she explains.”

Public Private Partnerships…

Is that not what PFI was about My Black Cat?

And how, My Black Cat, do you suppose they can get the costs of surgery down from £10,000 to less than £1000, and yet have the private part of the partnership making a profit for shareholders?
