Newsnight and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism

witchround

So, George Entwhistle, two months into his job, has taken the blame.

And dear oh dear, somebody else is up to his neck.

It is almost unbelievable that the most basic standards of investigative journalism did not apply to the Newsnight programme – the one that did not name Lord McAlpine. It is even more unbelievable since not one, but two separate professional entities – the BBC and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, were involved. A lawyer is said to have been involved also. In fact, all of this is so unbelievable, that maybe they were checked out after all. But don’t hold your breath.

The Witch Doctor finds it odd too that the Director General of the BBC, George Entwhistle resigned on a Saturday night before an urgent investigation into the facts was completed – an investigation deemed to be so urgent that the results were to be on his desk during the course of Sunday. As a consequence of the resignation, a “locum” had to be beamed into his chair while it was still warm early Sunday morning to establish the facts. It’s the weekend for pity’s sake!

At the back of her mind, The Witch Doctor has a gnawing discomfort that if the allegations, rather than having been against an un-named wealthy Lord who may well sue, but instead against an un-named poor witch, black cat or pleb, there may not have been the same degree of urgency or a precipitate resignation over a weekend.

However, that’s by the bye. Here is a statement from the Trustees of The Bureau of Investigative Journalism released yesterday:

“The Bureau of Investigative Journalism was established to apply the highest standards of investigative and fact-based journalism in the public interest. During its first three years, the Bureau has won a number of major awards for its journalism and built a reputation for quality and the avoidance of sensationalism. The governing Trust of The Bureau does not endorse any material or output that fails to meet these standards.

“The Bureau was named as a contributor to the broadcast of a BBC Newsnight programme on November 2 on child abuse in North Wales. The Trustees are appalled at what appears to be a breach of its standards. To the extent that the principles of The Bureau have been ignored by an involvement in this story, remedial action will be taken against those responsible. The Trustees must ensure that due process is applied and are establishing the key facts.”
