Leadership is entering a new phase

If you are a witch you will like this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“Do not follow where the path may lead: go instead to where there is no path and leave a trail”

We witches are not good at doing what we are told. Mostly what the The Humankind try to tell us to do nowadays is not the least sensible. We go our own way and we do not suffer fools gladly. We do not creep and we do not acknowledge the power game. This is not a failing. It stands us in good stead.

Apparently the medical profession don’t like being told what to do either, nor do they like ordering others about (assuming the word clinician = doctor).

It says so here:

“There seems to be no clear definition of “effective leadership” within many NHS foundation trusts ; people neither like giving or receiving orders (particularly clinicians)”

This comes from MONITOR from the document:

This leadership programme will use the MISSION COMMAND approach, as in a battle.

Yes. Battle.

This is what it says:

“It is a style of command developed to facilitate leadership in intensely complex, high pressure situations – such as battle – by decentralizing command and initiative.

Mission Command is defined as follows:
“(i) Subordinates, understanding the commander’s intentions; (ii) their own missions; and (iii) the context of those missions. They are told what effect they are to achieve and why it needs to be achieved. They then decide within their delegated freedom of action how best to achieve their missions.”

They have a flow chart where the word “COURAGE”is the pinnacle. Courage is emphasised as having Active, Moral, Commercial and Intellectual components.

Note COMMERCIAL.

It is repeated:

“Setting Stretching Goals

Setting stretching goals in pursuit of commercial success”

Again, note “COMMERCIAL”

My Black Cat, subordinates who are doing what they are told, even if they are given a little flexibility in how they do it, are not leaders. Are they?

They just imagine they are The Leaders.

But they are The Followers.
